Women Power?

Tired of hearing women aren’t strong enough (physically and mentally) to hold an important job title or anywhere in general when there’s competition against men? Well let me give you a quick reality check, probably EVERY.SINGLE.WOMAN has felt at one point that they are just not ENOUGH. Why? Blame the self-absorbed macho male dominated world we live in and let’s not forget that social media plays a HUGE part in this as well.

Yea I’m not famous, and yea I’m not well-known either, I’m just a regular college student living life to its fullest. So you may ask, why should I listen to you? Why should I give you the time of my day? EASY! I’m just like you. I’m just a regular person who hopes to share her experiences through this website and hopefully someone will be able to relate and share their experiences as well and/or will want to get involved. Trying to make a change!

So now that I have your full and undivided attention, let me share one of my recent Facebook experiences I had with a friend where it unfortunately became all too personal real quick and homeboy needed to be informed STAT. This is how it all went down:

Q: Do you consider yourself a feminist?

Anonymous Friend: No. I am for equality no matter what. Feminists go too far sometimes. For example, we had elections in France last Sunday and we were electing 4000 advisers throughout the whole country. In each section, we had to elect two people at the same time. It was compulsory, a man and a woman so that 2000 women and 2000 men were elected. It's completely stupid. This kind of thing was done because some people think not enough women are involved in politics. And so what? Maybe they are just less interested by this topic. If we want true equality we should start by not categorizing people.

Although he had several valid points, I did feel a bit offended by the way he just immediately withdrew himself from the word “feminism” even though his definition was almost the same of that of a feminist. However, considering “feminist” has a negative connotation to it, he didn’t want to be labeled as that. I know he meant no harm by it, but I did believe he needed to be informed so that he would have an opportunity to really think about his answer. My reply was/is not only for him but to everyone who has the same beliefs as he does, and just needs to be informed a little more. !CAUTION, WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO READ MAY BE PERCEIVED AS A RANT!

ResponseOfAProudFeminist (Me): I completely understand your opinion and you offered valid points, however, I disagree with you on certain things. It's not because "we're not interested in the topic", it's because we aren't given the equal opportunity as men are. Geraldine Ferraro, Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin, tried to run for office and well, we know where that left them…not to the finish line. They were faced with an enormous amount of scrutiny and were immediately shut down all because people (especially men) couldn’t get over their physical aspect or just thought they weren’t strong enough. You also mention that you "for equality no matter what" but then complain about having to vote for 2000 advisors so that it could be equal to the other 2000 advisors that are men. You're contradicting yourself. If you truly believe in equality for all, then I'm sorry to break it to you but, you're a feminist!

In 1984, Geraldine Ferraro ran for vice president where she was questioned if she really could uphold the position of a vice-president. The public questioned if she really had the “cajones to push the red button".

Hillary Clinton would dress in a conservative manner but yet she wasn't taken seriously because people (especially men) did not want to vote for someone that looked like a "lesbian" or just seemed she had this cold personality...

Then comes Sarah Palin, she's the complete opposite; she decides to come out with this strong sex appeal...formal skirts, full on makeup, etc...However, people judge her of her strong sex appeal and therefore don't even give her an opportunity to really listen to what she has to say.

People just don't take women seriously in the politics or anywhere in general. All because people can't get over their physical appearance! It's like we can't ever satisfy the human's eye when it comes to women trying to get a point across because people get stuck on judging the way a woman looks instead of actually listening to what she has to say...

Also, being a Feminist is fighting for equal rights for EVERYONE, not just women. Feminism is seeking equal rights for women, men, the LGBTQ community, disability, immigration, people of color, EVERYONE. (This is the end to my sweet and to the point response)

Can I get an Amen?! Let’s be real here, woman need men as much as men need women. However, I do believe women need to be praised more. Women have made history and, I feel, we go unnoticed. We don’t get the same attention as men get when it comes to being a strong woman in this world. This is where we as women have to take a stand and put an end to this nonsense!
